1) Corrections:

I went back to my old posts and put some text/thoughts in there explaining the relevance. I guess from now on I’ll have more words and opinions… less pics and links. I’m enjoying how everyone in class has a tumblr… minus Luke’s blogspot. Makes people easier to follow.

2) Safe Haven:

I had a good time. The set-up was a bit awkward at first, but I was relieved when everyone began to warm up to each other. Dividing into smaller groups was a great idea. My ignorance had originally anticipated hardened, “tough-guy” characters who would be hesitant to share. What I witnessed instead was a great group of extremely articulate individuals with many interesting stories to share.

I talked mostly with a man named Staples, who is part of the Henrico group. The highlight of my evening was definitely when he burst into song. Not a bad Kurt Cobain impression. He shared his interest in music, telling us about his band and hopes to create a Nirvana-Beach Boys fusion. He was very willing to delve into his mental issues and the mental issues of his rock star role models. It seemed to me that he uses his musicality as a crutch to avoid the real world. After all, his heroes also had mental issues and lived flavorful lives on the road… full of drugs, sex, and rock and roll.

Just before I fell asleep that night, I felt very thankful for my cozy bed, great dinner, and roof over my head. I also got a very warm-and-fuzzy feeling as I drifted off, appreciating every one of the individuals we met at Safe Haven. I can’t wait to get started.
